It was a movie that people either loved to hate or hated to love. The satirical movie made for television first aired on Syfy in July 2013 that got 1.37 million views on its first night. For anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, all you really need to know is that a freak hurricane—not tornado—hit LA.
The catch? Yup, it brought some sharks along for the ride.
Sharknado has the internet to thank for its popularity though. Celebrities turned to Twitter to talk about the film and even Youtubers would mention the movie during a video. The next airing of the movie received 1.89 million just a week later and the third showing got over 2 million views.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the Asylum film a pass with an 82% fresh vote and an average rating of 6.1/10. What makes this movie so good? It might not make sense, but the movie is so bad that it’s good. You can marvel at the absolute brainlessness of the film or shout at the characters for stupid decisions. If you’re like me, you’ll do both.
If you can’t get enough of shark-related natural disasters, you’re in luck! There’s a sequel to the movie set in NYC. The Asylum also produced merchandise like t-shirts for the film and Funko made some POP vinyl figures as well. I believe there is also a video game you could check out.
Still not enough sharks for you? A third movie is planned for 2015. And it was all made possible by the internet, who just wouldn’t give up on Sharknado.
